NYK said Wednesday it was part of the successful demonstration of truck-to-ship liquefied natural gas bunkering at the Port of Kitakyushu.
Partnering with NYK for the demonstration were Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc., Saibu Gas Co. Ltd. and The Chugoku Electric Power Co. Inc.
NYK said the operation was the first LNG bunkering in the Setouchi and Kyushu areas of western Japan and “advances the four companies’ discussions on the commercialization of a new business in the area.”
The LNG fuel was loaded onto a tank truck at the Hibiki LNG terminal in Kitakyushu, trucked to a pier in the Asano district and then supplied to the LNG-fueled tugboat Sakigake using the truck-to-ship method.

“Since August 2018, the four companies have been in joint discussions on the commercialization of LNG bunkering, and this demonstration validates the feasibility of LNG bunkering in the area,” NYK said. “Going forward, the four companies will utilize the experience gained from this operation to accelerate commercialization.”

Any use of slow steaming should be done on a voluntary basis through the marketplace between the business interests involved. Without a recognition of the complete supply chain, mandated speed restrictions for all vessels at sea will be counterproductive.

The Port of New York & New Jersey is called by 42 liner services that directly connect it to regions outside North America, 11 of which call Asia, according to BlueWater Reporting's Port Dashboard tool.
