Five additional shipping companies — CMA CGM, Evergreen, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Yang Ming and ZIM — have joined the Digital Container Shipping Association.
Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC and Ocean Network Express already belong to the group, which says its purpose is to enable digital standardization in the container shipping industry.
With nine of the largest container shipping lines in the world, the association says it now “represents a substantial part of the industry.”
COSCO has yet to join the group.

The organization also said that Henning Schleyerbach (pictured above) of Hapag-Lloyd will become chief operating officer of the group. Thomas Bagge, a former Maersk executive, is the chief executive officer.

There does appear to be some marginal gains to be had from slowing ships even further, both in terms of fuel consumption and cost. Before making this a mandatory requirement, we agree with Maersk that further evaluation of the unintended consequences is required.

The U.S. exported 107,655 metric tons of beef in March, a 4 percent decline year-over-year, while U.S. pork exports during the month totaled 211,688 metric tons, down 7 percent, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation.
