German liner carrier Hapag-Lloyd said it has successfully contained an oil leak from one of its containerships tied up at the Global Marine New York Container Terminal.
According to the carrier, a roughly 15 inch-by-15 inch hole was discovered in the hull of the Dublin Express during unloading operations on Thursday evening, through which oil had escaped. The hole was patched that night.
To contain the spilled oil, the carrier cast containment booms around the ship for cleanup.
Hapag-Lloyd did not say what caused the damage to the ship’s hull.

“It is still too early to make an accurate assessment of the damage,” the carrier said in a press release on Friday afternoon. “Hapag-Lloyd is working closely with the relevant authorities and interested parties to minimize the impact on people and the environment.”

Spot container rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam clocked in at $1,312 per FEU as of April 18, down from $1,431 per FEU four weeks prior, and down from $1,656 per FEU eight weeks prior, but still up 14 percent year-over-year, according to data from Drewry's WCI.
