Gulftainer USA Wilmington announced Thursday it had placed an initial order with Terberg Tractors Americas for 16 terminal tractors, the first three of which are scheduled to be delivered in mid-June.
The order is part of the Port of Wilmington’s “$100 million-plus modernization and improvement program at the port,” GT USA Wilmington CEO Eric Casey said in a statement. Subsequent deliveries are scheduled for August and October, according to a press release.
The Terberg Tractors have a superior gross combined weight rating of 155,000 pounds and incorporate a hydraulically operated fifth wheel with 75,000 pounds of lifting capacity. The low-emissions Cummins engine, which is compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4F standard, also includes a new design transmission that reduces fuel by up to 17%, the statement said.
The new tractors will be added to the six on the terminal, which are being retained, a spokesperson told American Shipper by email.

GT USA Wilmington in March placed an order with Konecranes for nine all-electric rubber tire gantry cranes and three reach stackers. The reach stackers have been assembled and are fully function at the port, the spokesperson said.

I can absolutely deny that we have started a price war and can also say we have zero intent to do so. We are focused on profitability and generating cash.

Average container vessel size on the Asia to North Europe trade actually shrank between May 2018 and May 2019, falling from 14,253 TEUs to 13,808 TEUs, although total container vessel count on the trade rose from 219 to 229, according to BlueWater Reporting’s Capacity Report.
