Container fortunes differ for L.A., Long Beach in May

   Container volumes at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach went in opposite directions during May.    The number of ocean boxes that moved through Los Angeles last month grew 5.5 percent, or 38,419 TEU, versus a year ago to 731,352, although the bulk of the increase came from empty containers being repositioned overseas.    Meanwhile, the Port of Long Beach on Thursday reported a 7.2 percent drop in box volume, to 497,892 TEUs.    Imports were down 9.2 perce...
