Great Lakes shippers’ ‘light loading’ plight

   Bulk commodity shippers with operations along the U.S. side of the Great Lakes could significantly boost their outbound and inbound vessel loads if it wasn’t for the insufficient dredging of the harbors and channels.    It’s estimated that the U.S.-flag Great Lakes vessel fleet loses more than 8,100 tons of cargo for each one-inch reduction in loaded draft, forcing many of these vessel operators to shrink their carrying loads, a process known in the industry as “light loading.”  ...
