Canada Coast Guard said that four people were removed by helicopter from MSC Monterey
, a containership chartered by Mediterranean Shipping Company, on Sunday after the ship reported hull problems.
The Canadian Broadcasting Company said the four were passengers on the ship, which was en route from Antwerp to Newark, N.J.
The master of the ship and crew of 19 have remained on the ship.
CBC said a crack was discovered in the hull
, but that it was "not at risk of sinking. It was anchored until early Monday off Portugal Cove South, with a crew of 20 on board, and was then being escorted to St. Mary's Bay to weather out a winter storm."
The 2007-built MSC Monterey
is one of five vessels in an MSC service between the U.S. East Coast and North Europe. According to BlueWater Reporting, it has a capacity of 4,549 TEU.
