A fire aboard a PIL-operated boxship in the Indian Ocean last week has been contained, according to reports.
The 1,740-TEU Liberian-flagged container vessel Hansa Brandenburg
was en route from Singapore to Durban when the blaze erupted on July 17 200 miles off the coast of Mauritius. All crew members were rescued by another containership, and salvors are now taking stock of the vessels and its cargo.
Reports suggest that the fire mostly affected one cargo hold and the ship’s accommodation block.
The vessel is owned by German shipowner Leonhardt & Blumberg and chartered to Singapore-based PIL. - Eric Johnson
