Maersk Line has stopped accepting cargo bookings to or from Iran as Western governments ratchet up economic sanctions on the country.
The line had mostly pulled out of Iran’s main ports, such as Bandar Abbas, last year, but called at the North Iranian port of Bushehr on a feeder service, reportedly mostly carrying food and other goods.
The service made biweekly calls using a chartered vessel, but those calls stopped at the end of September.
“Due to a combination of European Union sanctions as well as strengthened U.S. sanctions, it is no longer possible for Maersk to conduct business in the country,” a Maersk spokesman said.
The company will reportedly keep a dormant business entity in Iran to be able to resume service there once economic sanctions are lifted. - Eric Johnson
