Officials have broken ground on a 700,000-square-meter cargo terminal for Emirates SkyCargo at Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport.
The development, which will serve as the carrier’s new home base, becomes operational in May 2014. The first phase of construction is to be finished by December, with the cargo-handling system and additional interior work partially complete by April. Full completion won’t occur until September, but Emirates will still be able to operate from the building before that time.
The facility will also include 46 truck docks and 12 aircraft stands. Initially, the development will be able to handle 700,000 tons of cargo each year.
“The planned move of our freighter operations from Dubai International Airport to Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport is the next step in Emirates SkyCargo’s overall expansion and growth program,” Emirates’ new SkyCargo head, Nabil Sultan, said in a statement. “It provides us with a brand new facility for our freighter operations and will increase capacity and enable us to meet our long-term objectives.” - Jon Ross
