The Highway Account of the Highway Trust Fund had dropped to $8.3 billion as of the last week of January, according to an update by the Department of Transportation Tuesday.
DOT said the account will see a shortfall before the end of the fiscal year after beginning the period with $1.6 billion in cash, which was bolstered to $10.4 billion after a transfer from the General Fund.
"The surface transportation program continues to outlay at a greater pace than receipts are coming in," DOT said. " As a result, the cash balance has dropped by nearly $3.7 billion since the General Fund transfer occurred."
The agency provides updates on the Highway Account each month. For February, it predicts the account will climb a bit to $8.9 billion, but will start falling precipitously after April. A shortfall is expected to occur sometime in August.
