FedEx has broken ground on an 88,000-square-foot temperature-controlled facility at its world hub in Memphis, Tenn.
The facility is expected to open by the fall of 2014.
The development will also serve as a new heavy-weight pick-up and delivery operation.
FedEx's new facility will feature three temperature-controlled rooms encompassing ranges between -25 degrees Celsius to -10 degrees Celsius; 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius; and 15 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. There will also be an on-site international dock agent station, and it will be compliant with Europe's Transported Asset Protection Association regulations.
“With our new, world-class cold chain facility, we will be able to better manage healthcare products and other perishables in the event of unforeseen delays, such as clearance holds or inclement weather, and give our customers the peace of mind they deserve when shipping sensitive goods," FedEx's Richard Smith said in a statement.
