MOL reports its containership MOL Comfort
suffered a crack amidship and was ingressing water in the hold.
The company said the ship sustained the crack in the Arabian Sea (12'30"N 60'E) at around 7 a.m. local time on Monday morning while in transit from Singapore to Jeddah.
MOL said it was not possible for the ship to continue under its own power and, because damage was extensive, the 26 members of the crew took to lifeboats and were rescued by other vessels.
The ship has capacity of 7,041 TEUs. The company said some have been lost overboard or suffered damage.
The Website for New Indian Express
also said the ship had "snapped in two and sank off Yemen." It said the Indian Coast Guard participated in the rescue. The Website also posted dramatic pictures showing the MOL Comfort severely hogged and cracked
